The Brief Grief Brief
When you’re first informed that you are not picture of for a pay raise or promotion or both,
i.e, you are passed over,
is absolutely natural to going to a grieving.
No kidding.
(Not that you are. We’re sure you know exactly what we mean).
If you were truly fit for the job: All the more so.
Therefore, it is important to let yourself go through all the
five stages of grief:
denial – anger – bargaining – depression – acceptance
(the Elisabeth Kübler-Ross model).
You won’t be able effectively move on, without reaching the last stage: acceptance.
This is why it is worthwhile to remember that,
acceptance does not mean agreement.
It only means you accept reality to be what it is.
You may, indeed, have been wronged.
It’s possible that, indeed, it was not fair.
Acceptance doesn’t deny that.
What it does do is, enable you to regroup,
course correct,
and have a clear, actionable, PLAN to make sure this doesn’t happen again!
[Regarding the course correction:
It is not because your course was necessarily wrong in terms of absolute merit –
It may have been or it may not have been –
we will find it out during our training –
but because
it obviously did not work:
it did not produce the outcome you wanted, and potentially truly deserved!]
There are no absolutes
in neither life, nor the workplace
(or rather, there very seldom are).
Everything is relative, as a matrix shows.
For this you need to clear mind AND heart
which come only with acceptance.
Which is easier said than done.
Nevertheless it must be done.

What my BossProblem was
My BossProblem was that a senior nurse, one with a lot of professional clout, but a bit of a ‘character’, kept undermining me, second guessing me and generally looking down on me. I could have – maybe – stomached it, but not when it happens in front of patients and their families, as it sometimes did. Moreover, I was about to apply for a promotion for a multi-ward oversight position and was afraid this would sabotage it – if I can’t handle one senior nurse, how would I 40 such nurses?

I know it may sound odd to people out of this industry, but nurses actually have more power in many cases (doctors tend to come and go while nurses tend to work at the same hospital and even ward for decades), especially in a community hospital that tends to be smaller and more interwoven into the community, so that personal acquaintances matter (I’m out of town, recently relocated here), and yet more so when it’s a young MD like myself, and even worse: one who did his residency where he’s now practicing – so to her I’m the eternal student. To make things worse there’s the male-female thing in this crazy time – I was afraid to be deemed a sexist if I confronted her. Plus she really does know a lot, plus all the ropes…
